Label on verso reads: Collection de Monsieur le Baron Arthur de Rothschild, surmounted by a wax seal with the Rothschild arms. Verso also bears a label with the inscription “ no 64, Grand Salon,” and the Rothschild coat of arms.

Provenance: Collection Jacob Meyer (Baron, created 1822, James) de Rothschild (1792-1868), Paris; by succession to the latter’s daughter Charlotte de Rothschild (1825-1899, she married her cousin Nathaniel de Rothschild, 1812-1870, and was the subject of one of the finest portraits of Jean-Leon Gerome); to their son Baron Arthur de Rothschild (1851-1903, who resided at 33 Rue de Faubourg-Saint Honoré today the Cercle Interalliée in which this painting hung in the Grand Salon); sold Hotel Galliera, Etude Rheims & Laurentin , Robert Lebel expert, 1 December 1966, n°132 (reproduced); Collection Nana Mouskouri, Paris until 2010.
