Dubois-Pillet only decided to become a working artist after German captivity during the Franco-Prussian War; the delicacy of this painting is surprisingly one of a soldier’s. In this serene and tantalizing flower picture Dubois-Pillet typically eschews the meticulous precision and scientific contrasting of colour characteristic of the Pointillists Seurat and Signac.  Dubois-Pillet pursued more painterly spontaneous expression in his work; his dots of paint are not always even and in none of his neo-impressionist works does he attempt to follow specifically Seurat’s dictates on the opposition of complementary color. In this way Dubois-Pillet’s work was considerably in advance of its time.  Dogged by poor health however, the artist died in 1890, only forty-four years old and only one year before the death of his friend and mentor, Seurat.
