16 - 25 March 2012

TEFAF Maastricht 2012 will bring together the highest quality of objects in each of its represented fields. This year Stair Sainty is pleased to be exhibiting a perfectly preserved terracotta by Houdon believed to anticipate the marble portrait of Christoph Willibald Von Gluck that the artist presented at the Salon of 1777. We also have a thickly painted Henri Martin view of the Mediterranean and a Monet view of the Normandy coast. A dramatic large-scale nineteenth-century painting of a pair of Bengal Tigers dominates the entrance to the stand.

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, acquires Desportes Still-life

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, acquires Desportes Still-life

February 2012

The National Gallery of Art recently acquired Still Life of a kitchen table with dressed partridge, pheasants, a rack and leg of lamb, a basket of oranges and five ripe pears by the French painter to King Louis XV, Alexandre-Francois Desportes. The kitchen still-life shows game birds and rabbit, grandly prepared for a banquet, ready to be cooked in the palace’s ovens. The interior scene is unusual for its casual atmosphere in Desportes’s oeuvre.

PARIS TABLEAU, PALAIS DE LA BOURSE, PARIS

PARIS TABLEAU, PALAIS DE LA BOURSE, PARIS

4 - 8 NOVEMBER 2011

We are showing at the inaugural Paris Tableau. This new fair, held in the centre of Paris, is dedicated entirely to Old Master paintings and like the Musée Louvre, will showcase exclusively works painted before 1850. The gallery will be exhibiting a wide range of old Masters including a recently rediscovered Canaletto and a Francesco Guardi Capriccio. An oil sketch of the Entry of Henri IV into Paris by Baron Gerard to be shown at Tableau was the artist’s proposal for the related, later Versailles painting. Presented to the King for approval, Louis-Philippe later gave this sketch to the Duchesse de Berry. We will also exhibit a wonderfully personal work by Ary Scheffer related to the Louvre’s large-scale Les ombres de Francesca da Rimini et de Paolo Malatesta apparaissent à Dante et à Virgile.

Please contact the gallery should you wish further information about Paris Tableau, general admission tickets or tickets to the Thursday evening preview. A map showing the Palais de la Bourse, located just blocks north of the Louvre, may be found here.

TEFAF Maastricht 2011

18 - 27 March 2011

TEFAF Maastricht 2011 will bring together the highest quality of objects in each of its represented fields. This year Stair Sainty is please to be exhibiting for the first time since 1901 a recently rediscovered masterpiece, Ludus Pro Patria, by the highly influential Pierre Puvis de Chavannes; contemporary critics considered Puvis to be the greatest French painter of his day.  In addition, we will exhibit a sun lit Courbet from a series of views of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), which the artist executed while living in exile in La-Tour-de-Peilz, a town on the lake's Swiss shore.  Also of interest are two paintings by Dubois-Pillet, one of boats on the Seine, the other a still-life of flowers; hung side-by-side, they demonstrate this early pointillist artist's technique and range.
Should you wish complimentary tickets to the fair please contact the gallery.
